Seyfi KENAN

The papers compiled by Seyfi Kenan in this book were presented at İSAM meetings in 2010 and 2011. They offer an interdisciplinary perspective on critical questions on Ottoman and Islamic studies, and on the humanities in general.
Metin Kunt analyzes the process of differentiation between dynasty and governance in the context of the 16th century Ottoman polity. Martha Mundy examines the intersection between ethics and politics in Ottoman law in Damascus context. Colin Imber asks just how Islamic Ottoman law was, while Viorel Panaite examines the juridical status of Western merchants in the Ottoman Empire. John Hare examines the central tenet of divine command theory as he analyzes the intersection of theology and moral philosophy. In his contribution, Josef van Ess grapples with theology and society, the need for kalam, Islam and enlightenment.
