Early Classical Period
Undertaking serious studies in the field of Islamic studies, first and foremost, depend on examining the accumulation of the past in a scientific evaluation context and publishing it. Most of the Islamic manuscripts whose numbers add up to millions are not yet published or not taken subject to a scientific critical edition which is useful for researchers. In recent years, critical edition works published in fields of language, literature and history are pleasing, however there is still a huge need for critical editions in Islamic studies, especially Hanafid and Shafiid fiqh works and also the works in “rational sciences”, within the field of Sunnite qalam especiallt the Maturidiyyah and Ash’ariyyah.
In this framework, Türkiye Diyanet Foundation (TDV) Center for Islamic Studies (İSAM) has inaugurated the “Early Classical Period Project”. This project will focus on the period of Islamic history until the end of the VI. (XII.) century and will constitute a whole with the “Late Classical Period Project” of ISAM which focuses on the period after this.
Early Classical Period Project embraces especially fiqh and rational sciences (Islamic thought in general; qalam, history of sects, jadal and so on in particular) as disciplines, approximately a four-hundred-year period between II. and VI. (VIII-XII.) centuries (Abbasids and Saljuks, in addition, some local states like Buyids, Samanids and Karakhanids) as period, and the territory within the Baghdad-Samarqand line, i.e the center of then Islamicate world and its eastwards as geography. It is proposed to make publications as catalogues, compilations, critical-editions and translations.
